eavesdropping
I was at the gym today and overheard people talking politics, a collage couple to be exact. She saw Obama's speech today and she was giving him the highlights. As the conversation progressed I could tell he is a McCain fan-boy. Obama gave is usually news about how he will nearly cut all taxes for the middle class(being defined as people making under 250,000 a year) this would make it so the wealthy would be footing the bill for this upcoming Wall-Street bailout. She was stoked on tax cuts because she would rather hold on to her money and buy mac-&-cheese, than worry about bailing out banks. He was saying that its not fair to the rich because they already pay more taxes based on percentages and they if they have to pay a higher percentage too,"that's not fair," he said. In a way he is right, I don't agree but I can see the logic.
His logic basically says, "It isn't my responsibility to help people who are less fortunate/can't help themselves/can't pay their own bills," now if this logic was carried across the all the issues, then there would more than enough money to bail out the banks every summer. Your asking yourself why? Well, if we(America) didn't have to worry about anyone except ourselves then we wouldn't need half the military force we have now. That would mean no Iraq. no Vietnam, no cold war, no military-industrial complex, NO 632 BILLION A YEAR 64% of the total budget(2007).
I'm not saying that we should all should only "look out for #1" as the saying goes because wouldn't that just be anarchy? I believe in having a government because it provides order, protection, job/skill specialization(which results in better products and leisure time). I know punk rock is all about anarchy but I kinda like a living in a society. I also believe in leading a helping hand if I have a free hand to help out.
By the way Trickle-down economic has been a bad idea for a long time. Making the rich richer will not make the poor richer.
